TREAD AND TRAVEL TO WALL
Train advanced water safety and endurance by combining treading water and short swims to a safety point in deep water for athletic youth with disabilities.
How to Perform
- In a supervised deep area, have the child start treading water a safe distance from the wall using a comfortable leg and arm action.
- After a set time, cue the child to switch from treading into a chosen stroke such as front crawl or elementary backstroke toward the nearest wall.
- On reaching the wall, instruct the child to hold firmly and rest briefly while practicing relaxed breathing.
- Repeat cycles of treading and short swims to the wall, varying starting positions to reinforce orientation to safety.
- Encourage the child to recognize when to switch from staying in place to moving purposefully toward safety.
Key Execution Cues
Safety & Precautions
Additional Safety Notes: Maintain close supervision, set clear start and stop signals, and be ready to provide manual support if orientation is lost.
Exercise Modifications
Make it Harder (Progressions)
Increase treading duration, lengthen the swim distance slightly, or practice from different points in the pool to challenge orientation.
Make it Easier (Regressions)
Use a flotation aid such as a noodle under the arms, shorten treading intervals, or practice in mid-depth water where toes can touch intermittently.
