HALLIWICK WATER ENTRY CONFIDENCE
Build basic water confidence and postural control during supported water entry for children and adolescents with significant motor or sensory challenges.
How to Perform
- Have the child sit on the pool edge or top step while the therapist stands in shallow water directly in front of them.
- Support the child securely under the arms or around the trunk and gently assist them into the water to a depth where the feet can touch the floor.
- Allow time for the child to feel the buoyancy, gently rocking the body forwards and backwards within a very small range.
- Encourage relaxed breathing and eye contact, using games or songs as needed to maintain comfort.
- Return the child to the pool edge or steps with careful support, repeating the entry and gentle rocking several times as tolerated.
Key Execution Cues
Safety & Precautions
Additional Safety Notes: Maintain continuous physical contact and head support if needed, avoid sudden immersions or splashes, and stop immediately if distress increases.
Exercise Modifications
Make it Harder (Progressions)
Increase time spent in supported standing, gently widen the rocking range, or allow the child to hold lightly to the caregiver instead of firm support.
Make it Easier (Regressions)
Keep water depth very shallow, limit movement to simple holding in place, or remain seated on the steps with only partial body immersion.
