HALLIWICK STREAMLINED FLOAT CONTROL

Develop advanced trunk stability and alignment in supported floating positions for higher-functioning youth using Halliwick-style control principles.

Focus Core & Trunk
Environment Hydrotherapy or leisure pool with chest-deep and deep-water sections
Pool Depth Fully Suspended
Supervision Required
Equipment None

How to Perform

  1. Have the child assume a back float in chest-deep water with minimal support under the upper back or head as needed.
  2. Ask the child to bring the arms into a streamlined position overhead or across the chest while keeping the body long and straight.
  3. Cue subtle corrections such as pressing the hips toward the surface or gently tucking the ribs to maintain alignment.
  4. Introduce small controlled challenges like gentle leg sculling or slow arm movements while maintaining the floating position.
  5. Return the child to standing for rest, then repeat the sequence for several controlled float holds.

Key Execution Cues

Remember: “Grow long” from fingertips to toes, keep the ribs soft and the hips buoyant, and use small adjustments rather than big movements.

Safety & Precautions

Important: Avoid prolonged horizontal positions for children with reflux or discomfort lying flat; adjust range and duration for those with shoulder limitations.

Additional Safety Notes: Stay within arm’s reach, watch carefully for signs of fear or loss of alignment, and avoid sudden pushes that disrupt control.

Exercise Modifications

Make it Harder (Progressions)

Reduce external support, lengthen float hold times, or add small rotational challenges while maintaining streamlined posture.

Make it Easier (Regressions)

Use more hand support or a light under-back hold, shorten float durations, or keep arms closer to the sides.
