DEEP WATER SUPPORTED REHAB GAIT SET

Support safe early gait retraining in deep water for rehab participants who cannot tolerate impact on land.

Focus Lower Body
Environment Deep therapy pool or diving well with therapist access and safety equipment.
Pool Depth Fully Suspended
Supervision Not required
Equipment Yes

How to Perform

  1. Secure a flotation belt and move into deep water where the feet can only lightly brush the bottom or do not touch at all, maintaining an upright posture with hands ready to scull.
  2. Begin with 1 to 2 minutes of gentle suspended marching in place, slowly cycling the legs as if walking while using the arms to stabilize.
  3. Transition to a small forward travel for 1 minute by performing a slow running or walking motion, keeping steps short and posture vertical.
  4. Turn carefully and travel back to the starting point for 1 minute using the same controlled gait pattern, focusing on even leg use.
  5. Rest with gentle sculling and minimal leg movement for 1 to 2 minutes, then repeat the travel sequence 2 to 3 more times as tolerated.

Key Execution Cues

Remember: Move like you are walking through thick water, keep the trunk tall, and let the belt carry your weight while the legs practice smooth cycles.

Safety & Precautions

Important: Requires medical clearance; avoid if non–weight-bearing status has not been advanced to water-supported activity or if severe dizziness is present.

Additional Safety Notes: Stay within close reach of the pool edge or a therapist, avoid quick turns, and stop if pain increases or control is lost.

Exercise Modifications

Make it Harder (Progressions)

Increase total travel time, include short backward-travel intervals, or add gentle arm patterns once gait is stable.

Make it Easier (Regressions)

Stay in place with only suspended marching, shorten travel distances, or increase rest periods between sets.
