AQUATIC TARGET STEP AND THROW
Combine stepping, reaching, and throwing in a playful water game to build functional balance and coordination.
How to Perform
- Place a floating target or marked area in waist-deep water a short distance from the child.
- Have the child hold a soft floating ball and take one or two controlled steps toward the target.
- Ask the child to throw the ball gently at the target, then step back or sideways to a starting spot.
- Retrieve or send the ball back and repeat the step-and-throw pattern several times, varying step direction and distance.
- Encourage alternating arms for throwing and adjusting stance to maintain balance.
Key Execution Cues
Remember: Step first, then throw; keep the trunk tall and eyes on
the target, and use smooth arm motions.
Safety & Precautions
Important: Use caution with children who have difficulty sharing
space or following rules; provide clear boundaries to avoid collisions.
Additional Safety Notes: Ensure enough space between participants, use only soft equipment, and avoid fast or high throws near others.
Exercise Modifications
Make it Harder (Progressions)
Increase the distance to the target, add multi-directional stepping patterns, or introduce simple scoring to maintain engagement.
Make it Easier (Regressions)
Shorten the distance, allow stationary throwing without stepping, or provide light hand support during the step.
